Somalia: Weekly Humanitarian Bulletin Issue #45, 12-19 November 2010

During the week, there was heavy fighting in Mogadishu between the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) assisted by the African Union forces and insurgents. At least 40 people were killed and more than 100 others were wounded during clashes, the majority of them civilians. The worst fighting took place on 18 October in northern Mogadishu when at least 50 people suffering from blast injuries were admitted to Medina hospital. In another incident on 17 November, artillery gunfire killed at least 21 civilians and wounded more than 40 others in and around the Bakara market.

WHO says between January and 14 November, 3,955 weapons-related casualties have been reported from the two major hospitals in Mogadishu, including 718 children under 5 years. In the same period, a third hospital reported 2,959 weapons-related casualties.

Seven killed in clan fighting in Togdheer, Somaliland

On 16 November, two clan militias clashed at a village between Burco and Buuhoodle in Togdheer region, killing at least seven people and wounding more than 10 others. The clans clashed over water resources and land ownership. Elders are said to be mediating for peace.

A WFP contractor killed

On 13 November, a WFP-contracted truck driver carrying food commodities to Guri'eel district in Galgaduud region was shot and killed. Some 80 bags of WFP food were looted from the scene of the shooting. Galmudug security forces arrested six perpetrators and recovered the food commodities following the shooting. It appears that the killing is linked to a clan dispute and not directed against WFP.
